The Rotary Club of Glendora has proudly served as the charter organization for Cub Scout Pack 490 for decades, helping provide local youth with a strong foundation in citizenship, character, personal fitness, and leadership.
About the Pack
Pack 490 serves youth in kindergarten through 5th grade through the Scouting America Cub Scout program. The pack primarily serves students from Sutherland Elementary, Washington Elementary, Willow Elementary, and Hope Lutheran School, while also welcoming families from other schools, homeschool programs, and nearby communities. The pack currently has 24 registered scouts.
The pack offers a year-round program with scouts organized into grade-level dens led by trained volunteer den leaders. The pack currently has five dens, and each meets twice per month at the Glendora Scout Hut in Finkbiner Park.
Once a month, all scouts and their families gather for a pack meeting where awards are presented and scouts participate in fun group activities. Recent events have included a Raingutter Regatta, and an upcoming program will feature a Cool Critter Show.
Outdoor Activities
Outdoor experiences are an important part of Cub Scouting. Pack 490 typically organizes three family campouts each year at rotating locations. This fall the pack plans to camp at El Dorado Regional Park in Long Beach.
Leadership and Support
The program is supported primarily through family membership dues and participation in the local Scouting Council’s annual popcorn fundraiser, held each August and September.
The pack is led by a dedicated team of adult volunteers. The Cubmaster has served since August 2013, and both of his sons participated in Pack 490 before bridging into the Scouts BSA program.
Rotary Connection
Rotarian Gene Morrill serves as the Chartered Organization Representative, maintaining the connection between Pack 490 and the Rotary Club of Glendora.
The Rotary Club proudly supports the pack through ongoing partnership, service collaboration, and an annual stipend that helps cover leader registration fees. Scouts also participate in Rotary-supported community service activities, including the twice-yearly Trails Day program.
The Rotary Club is also grateful for the scouts’ participation in the annual Field of Heroes event. Pack 490 scouts proudly help guard the field of flags and participate in the Field of Heroes ceremony, helping honor those who serve and protect our nation and our community as well as many other heroes as designated by the individuals who have honored them.
