From "Focometer Project" to “We See You”Helping Children See a Brighter Future |
Sheila Gutierrez, founder of the Glendora Rotary Club’s Focometer Project and a long-time advocate for children’s vision care, has renewed and expanded a program that has served children for the past 24 years.
A Long Tradition of Service
For more than two decades, the Glendora Rotary Club partnered with the Rosarito Rotary Club to provide vision screenings and eyeglasses for children in Rosarito and surrounding communities in Mexico.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when Glendora Rotarians were unable to travel, the Rosarito Rotary Club continued the program using the Focometer device donated by the Glendora Rotary Club. Their dedication ensured that children continued to receive critical vision care even during challenging times.
Thanks to their successful stewardship of the project, the Glendora Rotary Club is now able to broaden its focus and address children’s vision needs closer to home.
Bringing Vision Care to Local Students
Under Sheila’s leadership, the project has entered an exciting new chapter. With the heartwarming tagline “We See You,” the Glendora Rotary Club is now working with local school districts to identify students with vision challenges and help provide the eyeglasses they need.

Many children struggle in the classroom not because they cannot learn, but because they simply cannot see clearly. Early vision screening can make a profound difference in a child’s confidence, academic success, and daily life.
New Technology, New Opportunity
An energetic fundraising effort spearheaded by Kathy Boyer successfully raised the funds needed to purchase a brand-new Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener.
This advanced handheld device allows trained volunteers to perform quick, efficient, non-invasive vision screenings for children, helping identify students who may need professional follow-up and corrective lenses.
Early Success
The first round of screenings in Glendora schools has already proven highly successful, with additional screenings planned for students in the Charter Oak School District.
These early results demonstrate the value of bringing this important service directly to students where it can have the greatest impact.
Rotary in Action
Through strong partnerships with local schools, dedicated volunteers, and Rotary’s enduring spirit of service, the “We See You” initiative is making a meaningful difference in the lives of students throughout our community.
When a child can see clearly, doors open to confidence, stronger learning, and brighter opportunities for the future.
